A day at the beach

After Lilongwe, where we stocked up on things that are less than ncessary for life, we headed to the Lake for a couple of days of R&R. We are staying at the Wheelhouse Marina at the suggestion of a friend who grew up on vacations at Lake Malawi.

Driving onto the property we were reminded of Kenya's Lake Naivasha... where Mikael and I started our "Safari" training course for Wycliffe missionaries in Africa. A canopy of African trees shading a patchy lawn that slopes down to the lakeshore. The difference is that at Naivasha you tent-camp with hippos munching grass all night... here we sleep in a thatched "chalet" on beds with a bathroom to ourselves.

Having spent my youth in Florida, I'm not very into swimming in lakes... The water is cristal clear and Lake Malawi has a high concentration of tropical fish to see, but shallow and waveless beaches with golden sand and black silt fall short when compared to the white sugar sands of the Gulf of Mexico. On the other hand, the warm waters of the lake are a paradise compared to the chilly lakes of Sweden!

My kids are growing up on three continents and I hope it will show them how to appreciate the beauty that each one has to offer. Pines ringing a blue lake where the nordic sun doesn't set, palms and sea oats fringing dunes that drop into the crashing waves of the Gulf, thatched gazebos under acacias where birdsong intermingles with lapping waves in the peaceful heart of Africa... those are the memories we carry around the world.

This afternoon we will eat fish and chips for lunch (we ordered the lunch when we finished our breakfast since service can take awhile!). Then head to town to change money before we stop at the fishery to see them feed the ciclids around 3pm. There are resorts of varying quality and price and I hope to check out several and return to the lake when we get a break later in the year.

For now, I wish you a happy summer vacation. May God bless you with rest in your heart even if you have a busy week ahead of you!

  1. wwwoooooo you enjoy that lake. I loved my week there years and years ago snorkeling and stuff. If you sit in the water so that your snorkel is just above the water and hold a bit of banana out to the fish, you'll be surrounded by them. Great entertainment.
